The farmhouse in Pico de Regalados, in Vila Verde, was rehabilitated, altered, and expanded. It was converted into a comfortable home, maintaining the references of an 18th-century rural house.
The building had been altered in the 70s in a less than commendable way. This alteration included additions, modifications to the shape of roofs and exterior wall finishes.
Thus, the project work focused on removing most of this intervention, as well as repairing the resulting damage. Consequently, the old building was restored to its original appearance.
Simultaneously, changes and expansions were promoted to accommodate the family in good comfort conditions.
The expansion carried out on the house in Pico de Regalados was developed over a ruined granite structure. This, previously used as animal pens and storage, gave way to a bedroom, laundry room, and technical areas.
The increase in covered area allowed the house to be equipped with the appropriate number of bedrooms for the household's needs.
In the expanded volume, an exposed iron structure was chosen. With it, the visual language of the expansion and other interventions on the facades was redefined. The voids of this structure were filled with "shirt and skirt" wood panels and glazing.
The interior of the old building was reformulated to integrate the new compartments, and thus, create a new functional coherence. Thus, the interior space of the house was adapted to current functional and comfort standards.
In this process, the old kitchen, its fireplace with a smokehouse, and the oven were also revalued.
In all interventions on the facades, the horizon over the landscape was prioritized, as well as the visual dominance over the estate from inside the building. Thus, the new exterior openings were positioned and sized with this goal in mind.
Moreover, they carefully illuminate the corresponding compartments, complementing the pre-existing openings. Sustainability and comfort Particular attention was given to the water heating and home climate control system. In this regard, a network of fan-coil units dependent on heat pumps was installed, which are also responsible for producing hot sanitary water.
However, the fireplace in the old kitchen remained in operation, and a wood-burning stove was installed in the living room. They serve the dual function of heating the environment during the cold winter days and contributing to the comfort that contemplating the fire adds.
